Act 5

Lady Macbeth - "Hell is murky!" (pg 206) - Hell is dark, as she sleep walks trying to get the imaginary blood off her hands
Macbeth - "The devil damn thee black" (pg 214) - The devil turn you dark, basically he's talking about how his servant has betrayed him
Macbeth - "to hear a night-shriek" - basically he's talking about how before an unknown scream in the dark would have frightened him

Act 5 is the end of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. We see that Lady Macbeth has gone crazy from guilt. She wanders her castle at night reliving the night when she and Macbeth killed Duncan. She trys to wash the imaginary blood from her hands as she frets over what she had done and the imaginary scene she keeps seeing over and over again. Later in the Act we go to Macbeth preparing for battle he says "the devil damn thee black" or the devil turn you dark because his servants are abandoning him. He's basically calling them traitors. Macbeth by know has lost all sense of reason and fear thus the quote "to hear a night-shriek" he goes on to say he no longer feels fear. Thus his judgement is distorted which ultimately leads to his downfall when Macduff defeats him.

Act 4, Scene 3

Darkness
"Black Macbeth" - Pg 184, Malcolm
"Black scruples" - Pg 188, Malcolm

Essentially in Scene 3, The dark cloud that is Macbeth has descended over Scotland and Macduff has gone to England to get help. He runs in to Malcolm and is trying to convince him to come back to Scotland and become king. Malcolm however is not sure if he can trust Macduff after all it could be a trap, because Malcolm's father was killed and as far as Malcolm knows someone could still be after him. So when Macduff asks him to come back and replace Macbeth, Malcolm says that he would be a terrible king much worse than "Black Macbeth" (meaning that Macbeth is a dark and evil king but Malcolm says he would be by far worse). However once Ross shows up and tells Macduff about what happened to Macduff's family, Malcolm begins to believe Macduff and says that he was lying about him being a bad king and that he would go with them to Scotland and become king.

Act 4, Scene 1-2

Darkness
Pg 160, Third Witch - "Slivered in the moon's eclipse,"
Pg 162, Macbeth - "How now, you secret, black, and midnight hags!
Pg 166, Witches - "Come like shadows, so depart."

Scene 1 is where we get our dark imagry. It is clear that scene 1 is meant to be very dark. It's storming, the witches are dancing around a caldron making enchantments. Thats where "slivered in the mood's eclipse" comes in, darkness is part of their enchantment. "How now, you secret, black, and midnight hags! This is how Macbeth calls out to the witches. We know that the witches are dark, in an evil enchantment sort of way. Also they are out at night making their spells. Macbeth wants answers so he demands that the witches give him answers. So the witches show him demons, that they've conjured, to give him his answers. "Come like shadows, so depart." The witches are telling Macbeth to go, they've given him answers and their retreating back to their work. Overall this scene is meant to be very dark, stormy, their are demons. Overall it's meant to be a dark satanic scene.

Act 3 scene 5-6

Act 3 Scene 5 – 6
Pg 146 – Hecate – “Upon the corner of the moon…”
Pg 148 – Hecate – “Sits in a foggy cloud…”
Pg 151 – Lennox – “And the right valiant Banquo walked too late…”
“men must not walk too late.”
Pg 153 – Lord – “The cloudy messenger turns me his back…”

In scene 5 we open up with the witches and their queen Hecate. She is angry that they did not include her in their mischief that they were creating with Macbeth. She says it is their art to stir up darkness and trouble with humans. In scene 6 we go to Lennox talking about the death of Banquo, he suggests that it is possible that Fleance was the killer. He also has a line relating to darkness “And the right valiant Banquo walked too late…” He says that even the best like Banquo can meet great harm if they are out to late, because one never knows what hides in the shadows.

Act 3 scene 1-4

Act 3 Scene 1- 4 Darkness
Pg 112 – Banquo – “I must becom a borrower of the night for a dark hour or twain.”
Pg 120 – Macbeth – “…must embrace the fate of that dark hour.”
Pg 120 – Macbeth – “ Banquo, thy soul’s flight, if it find heaven, must find it out to-night.”
Pg 124 – Macbeth – “ere to black Hecate’s summons…. Hath rung night’s yawning peal…”
Pg 126 – Macbeth – “Come, seeling night, Scarf up the tender eye of pitiful day…”
“Light thickens…”
“Whiles night’s black agents to their preys do rouse.”
Pg 130 – Banquo – “It will rain tonight.”
Pg 140 – Macbeth – “Hence, horrible shadow!”

Scenes 1-4 is mostly about the death of Banquo, which in itself is very dark, because it is Macbeth moving forward with more murders by killing his friend. Macbeth hires people to kill Banquo for him. This if for a few reasons, if he killed him it would be very suspicious, also Banquo was his friend and even though Macbeth is unhinged he still has a little bit of light in him that keeps him from doing the killing himself. This little light is what drives his guilt as it gets crushed by the darkness, that he keeps taking on. Which as we have already seen his guilt is driving him mad. After Banquo is dead the murders report to Macbeth of Banquo’s death and the escape of Fleance. Shortly after this Macbeth is ‘visited’ by the gohst of Banquo while at the feast. Macbeth though able to kill can not handle the crushing after effect of guilt.

Act 2 theme Darkness

Darkness Act 2
Pg 72 – Banquo – “…Their candles are all out.”
Pg. 100 – Ross – “… and yet dark night strangles the traveling lamp…”
Pg. 90 – Lennox – “the night has been unruly…”
Pg. 90 – Lennox – “Clamoured the live long night…”
Pg 78 – Lady Macbeth – “… the fatal bell man, which gives the stern’st good-night.”

There is a faire bit of darkness in Act 2. It is not as prominent as sleep, but it is still visible. Even excluding the quotes this is a very dark chapter. Macbeth kills the king, and begins to become unhinged. He has halucinations of daggers. He kills the king as well as the guards. He claims that the blood from his deeds can not be washed from his hands and that they would stain the sea red. Lady Macbeth warns him not to dwell on this because it would drive him mad. Although none of this direcetly refers to darkness they are all very dark happenings and the overall atmosphere of Act 2 is very dark.

Scene 4 - 7

In acts 4 – 7 we see talk of shadows and darkness. Lady Macbeth after receiving news from Macbeth about what the weird sisters have told him, she becomes filled with ambition. She wants nothing more to be king. She knows what such a step will take so she asks the spirits for strength and darkness that she may not see what it is that she does yet that she be able to carry out the deed. “Come, thick night, and pall the in the dunnest smoke of hell, that my keen knife see not the wound it makes, nor heaven peep through the blanket of the dark, to cry ‘Hold, hold!’ She also asks for this because she knows that Macbeth has ambition but she fears that he does not have the ruthlessness to accompany his ambition, that will drive him to make the step to become king. Thus she feels that she needs to be there to push him forward thus she wants the strength to do it.

Act 1 - Act 3

Through Act 1 - Act 3 we see a number of paradoxes, most tying together. The witches in scene one say "Fair is foul and Foul is Fair." As Macbeth and Banquo enter onto the scene with the witches Macbeth makes the statement "So foul and faire a day I have not seen." The witches then give Banquo three more paradoxes. 1st Witch "Lesser than Macbeth, and greater." 2nd Witch "Not so happy, yet much happier." 3rd Witch "Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none: So all hail, Macbeth and Banquo!"
So clearly we see the use of paradoxes throughout the first 3 acts. They are used to describe the constant confusion and contradictory events that make up life. "So foul and faire a day" It is a foul day because of the losses recieved from the battle, but the day is faire because they won. These paradoxes show that nothing is perfect, its like wherever there is a cloud their is a silver lining just as the same as the inverse, wherever there is a silver lining there is a cloud.

How has the visual interpretation of the story changed your impressions of the characters or situations? Do we get a different feeling about the characters themselves or their relationships with each other? To some degree, the film is told from Rob’s perspective, but we are no longer stuck in the tight first-person narration of the novel. We can see for ourselves. How has this changed things?

The visual interpretation did change my perspective of the characters somewhat. It certaintly made me like Rob a bit more, the same with Barry. Actually seeing them for some reason just made them seem more human than just trying to invision them from a book description. It also made me dislike Ian more, the same with Liz i just wasn't a fan. But as for Rob actually seeing him as a person, it just changes your view on them when you can actually see their emotion. It also seemed to change the perspective of some of the relationships. From watching the movie it seemed that Rob and Laura cared for each other a lot more than the book let on. It also helped us to see people differently since we were no longer stuck in Rob's perspective. We could see what other people were like for ourselves and not just how Rob described them. This can really change how we view people because it gets rid of the cloud of bias that Rob has and transfers to everyone else when he is describing them. However with the movie we don't have that cloud and we can more clearly see the characters.

End of High Fidelity

Rob seems to have come to terms with who and where he is by the end of the book. What brought this change about? Is it believable? Do you think he had really achieved peace, or are there any clues that he is still conflicted? What do you think of the ending of the book?

I think that by the end of the book Rob really has come to terms with himself. He finally realizes that he just can't keep running from relationship to relationship because he is scared. He then asks laura to mary him, but she turns him down. I do feel that Rob has grown a bit as a person, but i can't blame him for turning Rob down, because although Rob has grown he still seems to have a false idea of relationships and marriage. He seems to think that if he marries laura all their problems will go away and he will be loyal to her forever but thats not really the case with marriage because it takes time and effort. And laura seems to realize that although Rob has grown he's not quite there yet. I think what brought about the change was that Rob finally took a step back and evaluated himself and then laura gave him a few good pushes in the right direction and finally got him motivated again. Rob was then able to go back to being a DJ which he really enjoys thanks to laura. And he also got an interview with this woman who he fell for but after thinking about it he realized that he wanted laura, thus leading him to ask her to marry him which we now know that she said no. I think Rob for now has achieved peace. I think life is full of ups and downs and his new found peace is likely to be tested, but for now i think its good. I personally liked the end of the book. It wasn't happy or sad, so it kind of leaves it open to interpretation which usually i don't like but in this book it worked. It just would have been to cheesy and unbelievable had laura said yes to him, and it would hav been to deppressing had she left him all together.

Rob's Fear of Death

In these chapters, Rob admits that he is afraid of death and dying, and especially afraid of the people he loves dying. What role does this fear of death play in his infidelity? Is this a legitimate reason or just another excuse he has made up? What do you think of his response to Linda’s father’s death?

Rob's fear of death effects his relationships because he is afraid to stay with anyone over an extended period of time because he is worried that he will become dependent on the relationship and then he will lose them and he won't know what to do. Because Rob is afraid to loose the people he loves he keeps jumping from relationship to relationship constantly pushing people away so he won't have to deal with them dying. I personally don't think that this is a legitimate excuse. If you really love someone you should be able to live with the risks. Its always difficult losing someone you love but that doesn't mean you should totally cut yourself off from everyone just because your afraid that if you get to close you'll loose them. I personally feel that Rob needs to grow up. No one likes death, its not supposed to be fun, and no one wants to loose those they love. But if you really love someone its a risk worth taking. Rob just seems to be to immature and if he ever wants to succeed at a relationship he will need to get over his fears. I also feel that the way Rob acted at the funeral was very inappropriate. His ex-girlfriend’s dad dies and still all he can think about is himself. When Liz tells Jo that Laura has been going through some difficult times, Rob immediately assumes that it was him that was making her sad and frustrated and he takes pride in this. To me that is very immature, and it clearly shows that he really doesn’t care for her at all. What he feels for her is superficial and fake. If he really loved her like he seems to think he does then he wouldn’t take pride in the fact that he’s been making her life hell. Either way though it all comes back to that he behaved very inappropriately at the funeral.

Journal #4 Rob and his ex-girlfriends

In this section, Rob goes back to speak with all of his ex-girlfriends. What answers is he looking for? Does he get them? What does the outcome of this exercise tell you about Rob?
I think Rob is trying to figure out why he keeps failing at relationships. I think he's wallowing in self pitty and he feels that if he knew how they were doing and if he knew the reason for why they left him he would feel better. However he seems to be rather selfish and self-centered. When he hears that his first ex girl friend is married to the guy she left him for he feels better because he's like Oh it was fate therefore its not his fault. When it comes to Sarah, Penny, and Charlie I feel that he is being a bit of a jerk because he almost seems happy about the negative things that are going on in their life, and he uses these things to make him feel better about himself, if he really cared about them he would want them to be happy not miserable, he's only going about meeting with them so he can feel better about his own failing life, thats also probably why he fails at relationships he only focuses on himself and not the well being of the person he's with. One is only truly happy when focusing on the happiness of others rather than their own. He at one point makes a comment about one of his exes and how he wanted to absolve them or something like that, and to me that just proves how self centered Rob is. Its like she broke up with u get over it she doesn't need your forgiveness you didn't even care about her all the much in the first place especcially with that attitude. Any way i think this little excersize of Rob's just shows us even more how self-centered he is.

Rob needs to grow up

Rob is obviously very conflicted about his relationship with Laura. How do you see this reflected in the events that led to his and Laura’s break-up? How is it reflected in the subsequent relationship with Marie? What do you think is going on with Rob? Why is he behaving this way?

I think that Rob is very immature and that he has some deep rooted issues with needing to feel loved. I think his relationship with laura was based solely on the fact that he didn't want to be alone. After he got bored with Laura he turned to Rosie because she was able to fill whatever empty spot he has tho it was false and didn't last very long. He says that Rosie was just what he needed to spice up laura. I feel that this means that he didn't really love or particularily care for either of them he only wanted laura after she lost interest in him and he didn't want her to go because he doesn't want to be alone. After laura was gone he still tries to get her back although you can tell he doesn't really want her, he just wants her to come back to him so he doesn't feel so rejected and bad about himself. He then goes off and sleeps with Marie probably again because he's lonely and wants someone to fill that empty space. After his night with Marie tho they both feel awkward and it seems that it had been a rather poor choice.

High Fidelity chapters 1-7

In this section, we are introduced to Rob at one of his lowest points. What are your initial impressions of him? What do we think about his obsession with music and top 10 lists? In answering this question, look specifically at his recounting of his various break-ups. Examine how all of his relationships are versions of his first, and then consider what the common characteristics of these relationships tell us about Rob. Ultimately, do you sympathize with Rob or not? Do you like him or not?

My initial impression of Rob... He's a guy. He almost seems to fit the stereo-typical guy, with a few exceptions. He seems confused in his relationships and never seems to fully understand the women he's with. Just like the first one he was confused and just sorta went with it and we see this with all his other relationships. I do on some levels sympathize with Rob, its not fun to b left alone and he's hurting which is understandable. As for some of his choices in his past relationships I feel that he was stupid and with some of those i don't sympathize with him. As for liking him, he seems like a pretty likable guy but like i said he makes stupid rather ignorant male choices at times, not to be sexist of anything but that stereo-typical guy attitude does come out a bit.

How to Read

It would seem to me that Hornby's writing has a lot to do with our previous blog. Its all about the philosophy of reading. Hornby talks about how we've some how got this mentality that books need to be challenging otherwise they are no good, and there for because we think their challenging we opt. not to read but to do other things such as watch tv and play video games for our lesiure. The point he seems to be trying to get across is that books should be enjoyable. They shouldn't be painfully intellectual (unless thats your style), they should entertain and enspire. They should be enjoyable something you look forward to doing rather than regretting and getting a horribly sinking feeling every time you approach the task of reading said book. He also talks about how everyone has different styles and taste and that its ok to like different books, and that just because a book is a best seller does not mean you have to read it.

Title

I don’t know so much about having a philosophy of reading but I do have my set of preferences. My preferred genre is fantasy and science fiction. I like my books to be epic tales of adventures in strange lands with dragons and other various mythical creatures. I also really like books I can relate to, I find that if I like the characters and I can put myself there in the story then I generally will enjoy the book.
I don’t usually enjoy school reading that much because I find it difficult to get into what I’m reading. I’m not saying the schoolbooks are bad; no they usually are very good books. Just often times they’re not my kind of books, which then makes it difficult to read them since they don’t interest me.
As for expanding my choices, I guess I sometimes go to the library and look around for covers that stand out to me, or titles that sound interesting. It may not sound like the most effective way to expand your choices but it works pretty well and I’ve found some very interesting books that way.
I would say that expanding my choices has been worth it. I used to think that I wouldn’t like the Harry Potter books, until I read the first and after that I read them all and I have enjoyed each one. It was definitely worth it because before that I didn’t like reading and it was the Harry Potter series that really opened me up to fantasy and science fiction books.

Joe's dream with Christ

Explain the dream with Christ.

Joe's dream with Christ symbolizes and outlines his differences from other people who died in he war. We see this as he plays cards with a few other guys going off to war who all already know how their going to die, and he is alienated from them because he doesn't die, which one of the guys points out but then they decided to let him stay with them because they decided his fate is worse than theirs because Joe is neither among the living or the dead. He's like in his own state of being.

Morse Code

Why does Joe start tapping?

Joe wants to be able to communicate with people. He wants to show them that he’s not completely disabled, that he still has a perfectly good mind. He spends much of his time sensing vibrations to try and figure out what is going on. He eventually realizes that if he can read other peoples vibrations then why couldn’t they read his. So he begins using mores code to try and communicate with the nurses.

Mastering Time

Why does Joe decide to master time? How does he do it?

Joe does not really need to obey the laws of time for the most part because he doesn’t do anything but lie on his back because that’s all he really can do. However he doesn’t like being cut off from the rest of society, which the rest of society has to obey the laws of time. So Joe feels that if he can master time, in a way he could reconnect with society. Joe first tries to count every second of every miniute, and every min. of every hour and every hour of every day but in the end he couldn't realistically do that and realized it was to difficult of a goal. So instead he started measuring time by the intervals in which the nurses visited him, and he also judged when it was dawn by the sunlight he could (or at least he thought) he could feel on his neck.

What is worth fighting for

What does Joe believe is worth fighting for? What is not worth it?

Joe believes in fighting for something that is meaningful to you. Like a person close to you, maybe ur family or girlfriend or just a close friend, or maybe just someone that needs help, but he feels that this needs to be done on a one to one scale. Like you can help someone but once you start fighting for everyone then it just becomes a word your fighting for and Joe doesn’t think fighting for a word is worth dieing for.

The rat and Joe

Blog – Why does the rat come to visit Joe? What does it represent?

The book doesn’t actually make clear what the rat is. It could possibly just be an itch, but what makes is significant is that Joe doesn’t know. He is unable at this time to tell dreams from reality. For all he knows the rat could be real and the nurses could all just be a dream, but he has no way of knowing.

Joe's situation

Blog – What is Joe’s situation? Why does he compare it to drowning?

Joe was injured in the war. He lost his face, arms and legs. He is still alive but he cannot communicate all he can do is lay on his back and think. He can’t even tell the difference between dreams and reality. He compares his situation to drowning because he is like a dead weight. He is completely vulnerable and helpless, slipping between dreams and reality and that he says is like drowning.

Esther and Irwin

Blog – Why does Esther feel such a need to sleep with Irwin? Does she feel better or different after it has happened?

Esther wants freedom, she still wants to get back at Buddy but she also feels that she needs it to gain freedom and life experience. Except for the excesive bleeding and needing to go to the emergency room I think she felt better after it happened. She stopped contact with Irwin and this also gave her a sense of freedom. She seems to have felt very pleased with herself that she was able to have a one night stand and afterwards simply walk out without getting caught in an emotional relationship of any kind. She was simply able to tell Irwin she didn't plan on seeing him again and then just hanging up the phone. So yea overall I think she feels better after it happened, and as for feeling different it may have contributed to "lifting up the bell jar" at least just a little bit.

Chapter 17-18

Blog – What does Esther mean when she says she feels trapped under a bell jar?

Esther feels cut off from the world, like she's trapped in her own little world. The bell jar comes down and cuts her off from the world so that she feels restricted, like she can't connect with anyone like she has no place. After her time at the asylum she feels as though the bell jar has been lifted up a bit and she can now get fresh air rather than her own sour used air that was with her while the jar was sealed. At first while she was at the asylum she was anti-social toward everyone else but as the bell jar began to lift she started socializing and opening up with other people a bit more, so she wasn't as isolated.

chapter 15-16

Blog – Describe the new asylum Esther goes to? What might life have been like had she been forced to stay where she was?

The asylum that Esther is at seems rather nice. Its not at all like your typical asylum where they treat you like some rabid animal and try to hide you from the rest of the world. The patients are allowed to walk around the grounds and socialize and have visitors. Also the doctors seem to be more carefully selected and actually want to help the patients and they don't just treat the like dangerous crazy people. Had Esther stayed at the other hospital she likely would have been locked away with other people with similar problems and she would not be allowed out. She would have to deal with cruel biased treatment, and probably more shock therapy and perhaps worse. So overall I think Esther is very lucky to be where she is because she could easily have ended up at a far worse asylum.

Esther and y she's sad

Blog – What is wrong with Esther? Why does she try to kill herself?

To put it simply I feel that Esther has a problem. I also feel that she really needs help but unfortunatly at this time there isn't that much of an understanding of mental disorders and therefore there really is no way to treat them. Other than that she has a problem I think Esther is trying to kill herself because she feels that she has no purpose or future. She feels that she is in a world where everyone is constantly judging her and she has no way of getting away from that. She simply feels that there is no purpose to her life and that the days lay before her endlessly and meaninglessly and she can't bring herself to deal with that so she decides that killing herself is really the only way.

Dr. Gordon and Esther

Blog – Why doesn’t Esther like Dr. Gordon? Is he hurting or helping her?

Dr. Gordon is Esther's phsyciatrist, so I feel that since there relationship is strictly prefessional I would hope that he is trying to help. Especially since he's being paid. Esther dosn't like Dr. Gordon cause she was expecting some wise, ugly old man, to examine her thoughts and tell her what was wrong and instead she gets Dr. Gordon who is young and good looking. She feels that he is arrogant and isn't helping her at all. After her shock therapy she says that she is not going back to see him again. In my opinion therapists arn't fun but you have to give them a chance to do their job, and i don't feel that Esther was giving him a chance. She immediatly assumed that he was no good and therefore acted in a hostile manner towards him. Of course what she dosen't seem to realize is that she's only making it worse for herself, because therapists take note of how you respond and even tho she thinks she's carefully concealing what information she wants to hide and she feels she can control how he views her really she's just giving more of herself away, and she's just making it worse I mean she's paying him to help her yet she won't open up and let him actually help her. So as for is he hurting her i don't think so, now do I think that shock therapy was neccesary idk, i'm not a psychatrist but i do agree that Esther has some major problems, and Dr. Gordon was probably perfectly capable of seeing that.

Esther and how she acts when she returns to Boston

Blog – How does Esther act when she returns to Boston? How might her night with Marco have influenced her actions?
Esther's last night in New York with Marco changed her views, she had wanted to experience the city but after Marco attempted to rape her she decided that she really didn't want any part of that, and we see this when she throws all her clothes out and watches them fly away on the breeze. However upon returning back to boston she realizes that she really doesn't want to be there either. She is also dissapointed upon finding that she did not make it into the writing class she had wanted.

chapter 7-8

Blog – What does Esther want from Constantin? How does he react, and what are we to make of this reaction?

All Esther seems to want is to have sex with Constantin so that she'll be on an even level with Buddy, She wants to use him the get even but she also wants to gain knowledge. However when she makes a move by going and lying on the bed all constantin does is lay next to her until they both fall asleep. Esther is rather startled and offended by Constantin's actions, she worries that maybe he dosn't want her, maybe she's not good enough. We make of Constantin's reaction that he is respecting Esther which would lead us to think he's a good character but still we're not entirely sure.

Esther and Buddy

Blog – What does Esther think of Buddy? What does she want from him? What does she want him to think of her?

Originally Esther idealized Buddy. She admired him, even looked up to him, and she wanted nothing more than for him to like her. Eventually they hooked up and this made her very happy but over time she came to think of him as a hypocrite, mostly because everyone viewed Buddy as being so pure when really he had had an affair with a waitress. Its not that Buddy having an affair bothered her its just that even after that and even from those that new about the affair they still viewed him as being so pure. This then made Esther feel like perhaps she needed to go out and have a fling just to even the score with Buddy. However before she could tell Buddy how she really felt about him he ended up with TB and had to go off because TB is contagious, and he made her promise that she’d write to him because he said he would be horribly lonely. So basically she once admired him but now she wants to break off the relationship.

Pleasantville

Blog – Describe one or two ways the movie is trying to make Pleasantville look appealing. How is it trying to look unappealing?

The movie tries to make Pleasantville seem pleasant, basically by telling you everything in Pleasantville is pleasant. Everyone gets the girl, Bud wins at the science fair the basketball team never misses a shot, there’s always plenty of food, no one is homeless, the list goes on and on of everything that could be pleasant. However we also see that Pleasantville is not so pleasant in that everyone is the same, nothing changes, and eventually those who are different are shunned. We also see that Pleasantville is totally unrealistic because everyone can’t win, if someone wins then someone else has to lose but of course since loosing isn’t pleasant there is not focus on those that don’t succeed, in fact we don’t see them at all.

The Bell Jar chpt 1-4

Blog – Describe Esther’s feelings about her time in New York. Does she like it there? Why or why not?

I don’t feel that Esther particularily likes New York. It’s not that she doesn’t like New York it’s just she feels that there is some secret to the city that she can’t seem to figure out. She makes references to how she wants some of the city to rub off on her. She goes out around the city rather than going to the events that the other girls go to or the events provided by the group she’s with. She just feels lost, she can’t seem to get herself excited over being in New York like the other girls. She just feels empty and dull in a busy world.

• Blog – Research a TV show from the 1950s and talk about the values it may have presented.

The Andy Griffith show came out in 1960, its about a widower sherif Andy Griffith and his son Opie, and they live with Aunt Bee in Mayberry, NC. This is a comedy/family show. I think the values that this show is trying to present is probly that you can still have a good family relationship even if your not in the 'typical american' family. After an iconic show like "Leave it to Beaver" where u see what everyone thought the american family should look like it was good to have a show like this that shows u that not all families have to be like that to be functional. It also shows that small towns are nice and for the most part have no crime unlike suburban america.

Internment Camps in the USA

Blog – Research the internment camps in California during World War II. Based on your findings, was it ethical for the U.S. to take such actions against Asians and Asian-Americans? How do these actions compare with those taken against Muslim-Americans after September 11th? How do they compare with Germany’s actions during WWII?

Honestly I don't feel that the internment camps were an appropriate course of action for the United States to take. It is my opinion that just because we are at war with a country does not mean that we need to discriminate against people with genetic ties to that country. In my opinion by setting up those internment camps we were being no better than the Nazis. Sure we didn't kill off the people we put into the camps but that still doesn't make it right that we put them there in the first place. Discrimination is a major problem even still today because it comes out of ignorance and it breeds fear and hate. People were ignorant in assuming that all germans were Nazis and that ignorance caused a lot of pain and suffering for German americans, who were often attacked and treated terribly because of their german heritage. Many of them, i'm not going to say all because that would be generalizing and the whole point of this paragraph is how generalizing is bad, did not support Hitler, infact they viewed themselves as americans not as germans, so imagine that having ur country turn on you just because you were of german descent. The same with the Japanese and Asain americans, one day your an american the next ur being shipped off to a camp because you country is affraid of you because of your background and where your family came from. We had the same problem after 9/11 with discrimination and unfair generalization. Many people just assumed that all muslims and arabs were terrorists, which of course isn't true, but because people were ignorant and jumped to conclussions, that ended up causing a wide spread fear of muslims, which really isn't fair to them because it was the terrorists who attacked us not the Muslims and I think people really need to open there eyes and see that there is a difference, and that you can't judge a whole group of people just by what a small percentage of them, that just happen to be apart of that group, believe.

Chapter 16

Blog – What do you think of Wrights action during the election?

I greatly admire his actions during the election, I don’t know how much difference they will make but I do admire the attempt, and perhaps someone will notice. Perhaps someone will realize that things aren’t right or equal for all. It was just one person writing this and trying to stand up and point out the corruption, and perhaps it won’t work but perhaps it will, because it really only takes one spark to start a change.

Chapter 17-18

• Blog – Can one voice move a crowd to action?

I think that one voice can move a crowd. All you really need is a spark or in other words one person to spark their idea in the minds of others and it will continue to spread, until that idea of one person is in many people and they are passing it to others. This change could be quick or it could take a while, it may last or eventually die out but the point is, is that yes one person can make a change.

Chapter 12-14

Blog – explain the last paragraph of chapter 14, explain the terror

The terror richard is refering to is the cultural problem in the south. There is an obvious predjudice and discrimination toward the blacks from the whites, but thats not what bothers Richard, what bothers him is that no one does anything about it. Many of the African american population continue to lower themselves just to make a little extra. Example Shorty letting the white man kick him for a quarter, and Harrison who wanted to fight for $5. Rather than keeping their pride they play into how the whites think they should be and thats what disturbes Richard because he feels with that kind of behavior/attitude, they will never achieve equality.

Chapter 10-11

Blog – Is subservience a necessary part of living?

In a sense, yes subservience is a necessary part of living, it just needs to be applied to the right aspects of life. Like you really should probably be subservient to your parents, teachers and some other athorative figures to an extent. You should listen to them but you also need to use some of your better judgement to asses weather what they're asking you is alright to do and what not. There are also times when subservience is not necessary and thats in cases when what your being asked to do is wrong and with people you don't really know or those who really don't have that much say in your life. But yes to an extent i think subservience is a necessary part of living.

Chapter 9

Blog – What does Griggs mean by ‘learn how to live in the south’?

Griggs is reffering to the social codes of the south. He’s basically telling Richard that this is how things are in the South and if you want to fit in/live you’ll have to follow these social codes that are basically set up by race. He’s saying that whites like to be in charge and in the south if you’re black than that automatically makes you inferior, and there is nothing you can do about it, except submit to the whites cause that’s what they want.

Chapter 7-8

Blog – Is Wright justified in refusing to say the speech?

I do feel in some ways that Wright was justified in refusing to say the speech. They asked him to write a speech and he did so therefore it wasn’t right of them to tell him he couldn’t read his own. If the didn’t want him to read his own then they shouldn’t of had him write one. Now if they had handed out the speeches to the students and they didn’t have them write there own then Wright really wouldn’t have been justified in saying his own.

Chapter 6

Why is Wright so angry with his Uncle Tom?

Wright is angry with Uncle Tom because Uncle Tom decides that Wright needs to be taught a lesson and this upsets Wright because Uncle Tom is like a stranger to Wright. He has had no part in his life. Uncle Tom didn’t raise him, Uncle Tom had no idea what he had been through so what gives him any right to beat him. That is basically what Richard thinks and I think just about anyone would feel that way, is some strange relative decided to beat them.

Chapter 4-5

Why does Wright feel gratified after sharing his writing?
I think that Wright felt a sense of satisfaction that in a way by writing he created this little world of which the woman he read to could not grasp. As stated in the book “Her inability to grasp what I had done or was trying to do somehow gratified me.” I also feel that he probably felt a sense of accomplishment for having been able to write something, especially when I’m sure there were some who did not believe him to be capable even though many did know him to be very bright. But all the same I’m sure he felt gratification in having written something and then being able to share it with someone.

Chapter 3

Explain Wright’s response to his mother’s paralysis.

Wright’s first response to his mother’s paralysis is shock, which is natural, but he didn’t at first grasp the concept that it was his mother supporting him and his brother and that without her they would have nothing. He then had to work to try and support them. This shows Wright becoming more mature and responsible even though he is still only a child. After her relapse however, he developed a more pessimistic view towards the world.

Chapter 2

Wright says it was his ‘cultural heritage’ to dislike Jews. Relate that to his own experiences.

I think his dislike of jews relates to the racial discrimination between blacks and whites. An example i guess would be that I think he felt that the white's dislike of blacks was a cultural heritage therefore it was his cultural heritage to dislike the jews. Plus it also probably gave him some satisfaction to think that he was superior to another group of people since the whites were putting him down all the time.

Why is Wright Really hungry?

Wright is hungry because up until now he is so used to there always being food that he takes it for granted. He never stops to make the connection between his father and having food. So now that his father is gone there is no food and he's hungry and when he asks his mom for food she simply tells him there is none and he dosn't understand until he realizes that his father is gone and that is why there is no more food in the house.

Wright's view of the novel

Blog – Do you agree or disagree with Wright’s view of the novel?

I don't really know if I agree or not. I mean I liked the book but Wright does bring up some good points. In a way i guess it is a bit condescending and perhaps its a bit stereo typical of a white view of African Americans from back in that time period, when there was still a lot of racism. I guess i don't really know what influenced Hurston's style of the novel. I don't really know what type of crowed she was trying to appeal to either. But i do agree with Wright's opinion that she was symplifying the characters which i can see how that could b taken in a less than pleasent way. I myself would not really want my friends or me to be viewed as 'simple' or inferior so i can see how that point could be argued.

End of the book

Blog – Through out the entire book, Janie is quick to talk; however, she says almost nothing during the trial. Why?

I think that in the trial she dosn't really talk much because she feels that there is nothing to say. She feels that what happened, happened and there was a reason for it and it had to be that way. I also think that she really loved Tea Cake and she didn't want to think bad thoughts about him, she only wanted to think about the good times and i think part of it was maybe she didn't really think that she killed Tea Cake. Perhaps to Janie what she killed was the mad animal inside him and not really Tea Cake. Its almost like the mad animal killed Tea Cake and all that was left was the animal and Janie had to kill it or be killed.

their eyes were watching God

Blog – Chapter 18 contains the line the title comes from – “their eyes were watching God.” Explain what the line means in the context it appears.

In this context god is sort of like the huricane in that it seems all powerful and its taking away all of what they kno and leaving them in the dark. They're sitting together in the darkness straining to c beyond what they kno (darkness) in order to c what it is thats destroying everything around them. So in that way the hurricane is kind of like god because they wern't expecting this hurricane so its almost unnatural.

Chapt. 13-15

Blog – When they arrive in the Everglades, Janie is quick to work beside Tea Cake on the muck. How does this compare to the way she worked with Logan and Jody?

Tea Cake views Janie more as an equal and he feels that she is fully capable of doing work out in the fields, he also wants her to work with him in the fields so they can always be together because he loves her and hates being away from her. This is different from Jody and Logan in that Jody thought Janie was to good for just about everything except sitting around and looking pretty, Jody had her work in the store not because he loved her and wanted to be around her but so he could watch her and make sure she was making him look good. Logan thought Janie was capable of doing some of the work he did but the only reason he wanted her to help was because he needed an extra hand to help out around the place and to take off some of his work load. So the difference between Jody and Logan compared to Tea Cake is that Tea Cake loves Janie and her company whereas with Jody and Logan they just needed her for there own selfish purposes.

Blog – How do Janie’s actions with Tea Cake reflect her ideas about love as opposed to those ideas that Nanny, or others who grew up in slavery, valued?

For Nanny and others who grew up in slavery what they wanted most was safety and protection and to be able to sit hight up on a pedistal like the white mistress, materialsim was everything to them because they had nothing. So when Janie became of age Nanny wanted to marry her off to some well to do guy that would be able to support her so she would be able to sit up high like nanny wanted to. Janie however feels that true love and affection are more important than financial stability and wealth, she already had been married to 2 very well off men and she has come to realize that the dream of sitting up on the porch all nice and fancy like wasn't all it was made up to be, and that when it came down to it she wasn't happy even tho she had all that stuff

chpt. 7-9

Blog – In Chapter 9, Janie talks about how the angels grew jealous of man and chopped up and covered him in mud. How does this parable relate to Janie’s own experience?

To me this parable relates to Janie in that Joe was jeleaous of her. She was his but that just wasn't good enough for him, he was jelaous of her looks and how all the guys wanted her. And when he was getting older he was jeleaous of how she stayed looking younger. So even tho she was his and he sould hav been greatful for that, cause all the guys wanted her so she could hav just up and left, but she didn't so he should hav been more appreciative but instead he just cut her down and pointed out her flaws to her and the rest of the town. Which is similar to the jealous angels cutting down man.

Janie and the Mule

Why does Janie care about the mule so much?

I feel that the reason Janie cares so much about the mule is because she is sort of in the same position. She's not being tormented out in the open like the mule was but she is being controlled by joe just like the mule was controlled by Matt, and I think thats why she's sympathetic to the mule because she nows what its like to be controlled and manipulated. She isn't being physically abused like the mule was but i think she's being emotionaly abused by joe and that he's constantly tearing her down and destroying her spirit.

Blog – watch super bowl adds, pic 2 commercials, blog about what they appeal to and explain how they appeal, logic, emotion, ethics

Diet Pepsi Max
Appeals to logic and emotions in that every one is falling asleep and bad things are happening but once they drink diet pepsi max they're wide awake and things are great for them. This apeals to logic because no one wants to be tired or falling asleep on the job. This also apeals to emotion because no one wants to b that person falling asleep all over the place they wanna be the person whos fun and full of energy.

Fed Ex Carier pigeons
This apeals to logic in that it seems to be saying that anything other than fedex is just stupid, because it is completely illogical to genetically alter pigeons to deliver large packages and then unleash them on the city

Blog - Nature imagery comes up a lot in the first few chapters. Explain what you make of the last paragraph in Ch. 4.

"They sat on the boarding house porch and saw the sun plunge into the same crack in the earth from which the night emerged"

To me i think this may be forshadowing problems in their relationship. I mean having the sun go into the same place where the night emerges to me kind of symbolizes the death of there happines and the rise of their problems. I mean she didn't really know Joe for that long before she went and ran off with him, and idk just looking ahead the book says that joe had a big voice and liked to be incharge, that could end up causing problems for Janie because he may start trying to control her and Janie at least right now is rather free spirited.

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

– In the opening chapter, Janie is returning home from a long journey (we don’t yet know from where). How do townspeople react to her? Compare and contrast this experience to the one she recounts about growing up playing with the Washburn children in Chapter 2.

The towns people react negatively to her upon her return, they become suspicious of her and start judging her immediatly. In her early childhood before she new she was colored she fit right in with the white children and they accepted her. This is an interesting contrast because the ppl of the town she lives in are colored like her yet they don't accept her in the same way the white children did, infact they sit back and judge her and spread gossip.

Harlem Hell Fighters

Harlem Hell fighters
- the popular name for the 369th Infantry Regiment
- formerly the 15th New York National Guard Regiment
- the first African-American Regiment during WWI
- commanded by Col. William Hayward
- shipped out from New York Port of Emabarkation on December 27, 1917, and joined its Brigade upon arrival in France, but the unit was relegated to Labor Service duties instead of combat training
- it was finally decided on April 8, 1918 to assign the unit to the French Army for duration of the United States participation in the war.
- The men were issued French helmets and brown leather belts and pouches, although they continued to wear their U. S. uniforms
- during its service the regiment suffered 1500 casualties and took part in the following campaigns:
- Champagne - Marne
-Meuse - Argonne
- Champagne 1918
-Alsace 1918

The Harlem Hell fighters were the first African-American Regiment during WWI, they accomplished a lot during there time in the war and contributed greatly to our victory in the war. They're achievements contributed greatly toward the civil rights movement as well as to the war, but they also opened up many opportunities for African American citizens to join the service.
