Blog – What does Esther mean when she says she feels trapped under a bell jar?
Esther feels cut off from the world, like she's trapped in her own little world. The bell jar comes down and cuts her off from the world so that she feels restricted, like she can't connect with anyone like she has no place. After her time at the asylum she feels as though the bell jar has been lifted up a bit and she can now get fresh air rather than her own sour used air that was with her while the jar was sealed. At first while she was at the asylum she was anti-social toward everyone else but as the bell jar began to lift she started socializing and opening up with other people a bit more, so she wasn't as isolated.

I really agree with what you have said about why she chose a bell jar to describe the way her illness made her feel. I did not think about it being a sense of being anti-social, but I did feel that she had a feeling of being suffocates by her illness.
